What is paint protection by Melbourne Mobile Detailing

What is paint protection???

It all begins with Autotriz nano ceramic coatings

Silicon (Silica) Dioxide is an oxide of silica with the chemical formula SiO2. This technology allows an end user to spray coat industrial and domestic surfaces with a super durable coating of invisible, easy to clean glass. The application of SiO2 is amazingly straight forward. After proper preparation of surfaces and fabrics can be coated within minutes

The application method allows the end user to deposit a nano scale layer of molecular, particle free glass, onto the surface of most items. The molecules of glass come from pure quartz sand. Just like domestic glass, the coatings are chemically inert and highly resistant to acids. The coatings also offer resistance to alkalis and solvents.

For the very best ceramic paint protection

Although there are many similarities to standard glass. These coatings are stunningly different. The layer is flexible, breathable, highly durable, heat tolerant, anti-microbial and offers non stick and “easy clean” characteristics. The thinnest coatings are undetectable, super phobic (repel oil and water), anti-microbial, super-durable, heat tolerant, breathable, flexible, physiologically harmless, easy to apply and environmentally friendly. All coated surfaces become “easy clean” and in most instances the coated surfaces can be cleaned with water alone.

German made advanced technology is the solution to many problems in the home and in many fields of industry. In healthcare and food production, where cleanliness is vital, the coatings have proven to be the answer to problems associated with difficult to clean surfaces, previously a breeding ground for bacteria. In the auto industry, where paint protection, stain proofing and rain repellent surfaces are sought, Autotriz ceramic coatings have proven to be the chosen technology. In the aviation sector where interior and exterior surfaces have to be protected, nano ceramic technology is being rapidly adopted. The list is almost endless.

A film of nano ceramic, only 100nm (approximately 500 times thinner than a human hair), is incredibly durable. Several domestic coatings can withstand 100,000 wiping actions; some of our industrial coatings can withstand many 100s of thousands of wiping actions.

nano ceramic ultra thin coating technology has been described as “one of the world’s most versatile technologies” and when you consider it is easy to apply, heat tolerant, highly durable, chemically inert, food safe, low cost and anti bacterial, you can see why. Autotriz has been used as a food additive for many years.

It is commonly used in products such as toothpaste, ketchup, and beer. However another of its great values to the food industry is as a surface coating.

Surfaces coated with Autotriz exhibit anti-sticking, easy clean, stain proofing and biostatic characteristics. As ceramic coatings are inherently food safe and inert, it is the ideal coating for food production plants, butchery departments, storage vessels, kitchen implements and food handling surfaces.

Autotriz s can be applied to almost any surface, and in most instances we have an “off the shelf” solution to most requests. It should be stressed that not all of our coatings are at the nano scale. Some of our coatings are in the 2-3 micron range.

A nano scale coating is ideal if you wish to coat optical lenses but if you wish to coat flooring in a supermarket then a thicker coating may be more suitable. In all instances our coatings are low cost and very easy to work with.

Autotriz coatings can be used on almost all surfaces within the Healthcare sector. This includes clothing, stethoscopes, surgical instruments, walls, floors, operating theatres and bedside tables. Literally hundreds of surfaces can be coated within a hospital, dental surgery or similar environment.

Autotriz is ideal for protecting cars and motorcycles. Alloy wheels become easy to clean and blemish free, as brake dust does not burn into the coating. Exterior body work and fuel tanks become protected by a glossy, easy to clean and abrasion resistant coating.

Car seats become stain resistant and odours can be significantly reduced, especially if an anti-bac variant is used. Perhaps most significantly all of the windows can be coated with a highly durable and undetectable super-phobic coating which massively increases visibility when driving in heavy rain.

The permanent removal of imperfections for that ultra perfect finish

What is paint correction?

Your finest choice for paint correction and paint protection in melbourne

Paint correction is a term that is now commonly used by professional car detailers around the world to describe the process of restoring and rejuvenating the paintwork of a vehicle, mostly through the elimination of surface imperfections, that dull, oxidize, or haze the surface by reflecting light off in various directions, therefore detracting from a true and proper, clean, sharp, reflection. These imperfections include things like swirl marks & fine scratches, bird dropping etching & acid rain etching, hologramming & buffer trails, and random isolated deep scratches

Paint Correction by Melbourne Mobile Detailing  is the permanent removal of imperfections within your car paint to reveal a perfect, deep, glossy shine… Paint Correction is not a just ‘cut or buff’ it is a complete transformation of your car’s paintwork and requires a lot of time and expertise, it is for customers who are looking for the best possible finish for their car paint. It is a timely process with nothing short of stunning results

The term paint correction should only really be used if these imperfections are properly removed and are not just merely covered up or hidden with filler based products. The actual corrective process itself comprises of a small amount of clear coat or paint being removed from the surface with the use of abrasive polishes, which are applied and worked in with appropriate polishing machines, in order to level out the surface.

Before any paint correction is undertaken, a thorough wash and decontamination of the vehicle is performed. Paintwork is properly washed and cleaned to remove any loose dirt and debris, then after the wash process is clayed with a specialist automotive clay bar, which safely removes any bonded surface contaminants such as tar spots and industrial fallout.

It is important these contaminants are removed before the paint correction process because if they were to become dislodged and caught up in the pad of a polishing machine, they could easily inflict damage onto the surface very quickly. It also helps to leave the surface very smooth, which in turn, allows the polishing machine to move freely over the surface, reducing the possibility of hopping or sticking occurring. Lastly, claying the paintwork helps you to properly observe the progress of the correction process because you can see the true condition of the surface as you are working.

The polishing is usually a multistage process as a range of different grades of polish are used, ranging from heavier cutting compounds, which remove the surface material, to finer products which then remove any marks that the heavier products may have inflicted and generally refine the finish. During the paint correction process it is common for a paint depth gauge to be used.

Daily wear and paint imperfections like; swirl marks, water spots, light scratches and even bird etching marks can leave your paint looking tired and dull. Paint Correction can usually remove all of these without the high cost and inconvenience of a respray.

Based on our many years of experience we will be more then happy to provide you with an informative and accurate time and cost for correcting your paintwork.

Proper preparation is also the key to good results, your car will be snow foamed to dissolve all the dirt and grime, de-waxed to remove any old polishes or waxes that maybe hiding more defects, decontaminated to remove road tar, tram dust, tree and more – and then taped up with 3M automotive tape to protect the trim, rubbers and other areas that are sensitive. This preparation takes time but ensures the very best results – many other ‘car detailers’ simply skip this step and it shows in the end result.

Unlike the local detailer we have been exclusively trained by many unique manufacturers of the worlds best polishes on how to revive your paintwork, imported from many countries from around the world including Germany and the US, these polishes are offered and distributed in very small amounts and are highly effective on all clear coatings.

We also use specialist lighting to be able to see all of the paint imperfections, and ensure we focus on every area of your car, this lighting imitates sunlight which as any enthusiast knows shows off paintwork to its very best or very worst!

After permanently renewing your paint, we will then detail the rest of the exterior of your car, and protect your paint with a paint sealant or coating and offer you a choice between the two. This will seal in that deep, clear gloss ensuring it remains longer and makes it easier for you to wash and keep your car immaculate.

Once completed professionally, good paint correction can last for many years, it is not something that needs to be repeated frequently – proper washing, protection and maintenance are the key to keeping your paint in excellent condition.

This measures the thickness of the paint on the metal panel and is used before, during and after the process to monitor how much material is being removed and ensure an excess is not removed which could leave the paint too thin or even cause irreversible damage such as a strike through the paint. Specialist halogen or LED lamps which replicate the effect of direct sunlight on the surface are also used during the process to check the condition of the paintwork and see how successfully the surface scratches and imperfections are being removed.

Some scratches or imperfections may actually be too deep or severe to safely remove without risking removing to much surface paint or clear coat and so are minimized and reduced as best as possible using techniques with the machine polisher and polish products that round off the edges of the scratches and make them far less apparent in direct light.

After correction, the panels are wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol which removes any oils that may have been left over from the polish and reveals the true finish, including any areas that may have been missed or require a little more work. Once complete, fully corrected paintwork will shine brilliantly and produce stunning reflections because there are now no longer any scratches and imperfections to scatter and reflect the light rays off in different directions.

Paint correction is a very labor intensive process and is usually the most time consuming part of the car detailing process. Consequently, it commands high premiums from professional detailers & car cleaners, and amateurs or enthusiasts should only attempt to correct their own paintwork if they are completely confident in doing so or have enough experience to carry it out safely.

How do we examine your paint to evaluate the condition?

Firstly we use a ‘Paint Thickness Gauge’ that tells us the overall thickness of your paint in microns, these professional gauges are worth hundreds or thousands of dollars and can provide valuable information to the history of the paint. We also include our years of detailing experience to investigate the paint using xenon light, to also find if the car has been resprayed or repaired, as these are also important factors.

How long does Paint Correction take?

It depends entirely on the current condition of your paint. Some minor paint corrections can take 2 days, while some serious corrections for badly weathered and worn paint can take 6-7 days – yes that is up to 50 hours of polishing, refinement and finishing for one car.

How much does Paint Correction cost?

Time and quality equal cost, so it depends on how long a Paint Correction is going to take. Generally the price averages at $600 for a minor correction of entire vehicle

Does Paint Correction remove a lot of paint and endanger my car?

If done by a real professional that knows about paint types, hardness, depth and uses the best car care products and modern techniques – No. The majority of imperfections are within the first 5-10 microns of paint/clear coat, a modern car should come with 100-140 microns of paint. If the correct techniques are used then the removal of paint is minimal and consistent, a lot of cars have more paint ‘hacked off and unevenly’ by some unqualified detailers and car washes that offer a cheap ‘cut and buff’.

When you polish a car with a machine, will it leave holograms and swirl marks?

Incorrect. When car paint is polished badly using poor technique, cheap products, dirty pads or insufficient preparation then yes, holograms / buffer trails or swirl marks are left in the paint and these can be seen in the sunlight. We prepare the paint surface properly, use only the best products and 30+ years of combined experience – we guarantee results.

Why don’t you offer Stage 1 or 2 details?

Some detailers offer stage 1, 2 or 3 details / corrections / enhancements. We do not believe in this kind of ‘detail’ – let alone for a ‘paint correction’. The reality is that the paint on your car is in varying conditions on different areas/panels. For example; the paint on your bonnet or boot is probably in worse condition due to harsher circumstances than the paint on your doors, perhaps. Therefore it will take more time, more ‘stages’ with the polisher and a range of polishes and pads – so while 1 stage might give good results for some areas, it will not for all. We analysis and treat every area of your car with focused techniques to deliver real results and bring all panels up to the same standard, some panels need 1 or 2 stages while others may need 4 or 5 to achieve the same finish.

In conclusion, paint correction is the process of removing surface scratches and imperfections from a vehicles paintwork, which involves the use of machine polishers and a range of different polish products. A fully corrected vehicle when viewed in direct sunlight will show only true reflections and no swirl marks, scratches or blemishes will be visible to the naked eye.

Lastly, it is important to distinguish between paintwork that has been truly corrected and paintwork that has been treated with products that are designed to mask and fill surface imperfections such as an all in one polish for example. This should not be referred to as paint correction even if no scratches or blemishes are apparent, because they have not been genuinely removed and are still present under the products fillers, which in time, will wash away and reveal them once more.
